The key comparison is across local authorities with different levels of support for Leave in 2016, looking at mental health before and after the referendum. Young people from ethnic minorities living in areas that voted more strongly to leave the European Union (EU) experienced a decline in their mental health after the referendum. Moreover, minority ethnic groups have been found to disengage with EHRs and are more likely to access mental health services through crisis pathways. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have not been widely implemented in mental health settings, representing a significant gap in digital health care transformation. This study supports the effectiveness of teacher empowerment training in screening, guiding, and referring schoolchildren to behavioural and mental health problems. Black individuals in the U.S. receive mental health treatment at a 28% rate (SAMHSA, 2022).

To further assess epidemiological representativeness, we tested our respondents’ data against data from a representative sample of the local neighborhood and did not find significant differences. Our sample reflects the average age and gender distribution of the respective neighborhood according to local registry data . We matched the local-level data with subjective, individual-level parameters. They included age and gender distribution, ethnic density, and local poverty, defined as the percentage of social welfare (Arbeitslosengeld II) recipients in each neighborhood. The results also imply that effective prevention may require institutional and relational strategies—alongside individual support—such as inclusive curricula, peer sensitization, and policies that strengthen belonging and psychological safety in higher education. Your new experience awaits. That is what people are supposed to do. But it’s very important to educate people about mental illness and let them know that this is not something that you could just get over on your own.
